It was the weekend after Michigan lost to Appalachian State and I found myself staying in a hotel that was experiencing a cable malfunction. I was unable to watch the Ohio State Buckeyes or the Michigan Wolverines lose to Oregon State. When the cable is out in your hotel room, you find the closest sports bar which happened to be the sports book at the now Westgate Las Vegas Race and Sportsbook. With over 30,000 square feet of space and more than 300 seats, this sports book is incredible. To get a seat on a Saturday or Sunday, it is not uncommon to wake up at 5am or 6am to go downstairs and claim your seat(s) for the day. I have spent many Saturday’s and Sunday’s watching my favorite teams duke it out. In addition to comfortable seating, cocktail service, a great sound system, and spectacular televisions, the staff is helpful and friendly. I was unsure of how to bet and quickly learned by talking to the locals that frequented the book. I quickly learned the lingo and began making over/under bets at the counter. The staff was helpful and repeated my bet request in able to ensure I was putting in the correct bet. While watching the games, announcements are made periodically about half time wagers or other sporting event wagers. I found it to be very helpful to hear these announcements as in other sports books I would miss a Nascar Race start because I wasn’t paying attention and then be disappointed when I missed the bet cut off.
The Westgate sports book is located close to the buffet and a grill. Grabbing a bite to eat between games is easy to do and does not take much time. Typically, if you are betting, you are able to drink for free during the games you are betting on. This is a great draw for many and convenient.
Another great sports book in Las Vegas is The Playing Field Race & Sports book at Planet Hollywood. This book is right off of one of the mall entrances and is a great spot to watch the games and hang out with friends. The comfortable couches and leather chairs with low tables make the atmosphere modern and upscale. A large bar is attached to the sports book along with a VIP closed off area for those who earn a seat with their high dollar bets. Close by are some great eateries such as the Earl of Sandwich or Pink Hotdogs. In order to enjoy a free beverage, you must bet at least $50 and have a betting ticket to show for it. If you are not betting that much, you can purchase beverages from the bar that is attached to the book. This sportsbook is convenient as it is right in the middle of the strip and is easily accessible to those staying in the Bellagio, Cosmopolitan, Paris, Planet Hollywood area. As it is right off of the Planet Hollywood mall entrance, many can enjoy the game while the ladies shop and spend their hard earned dollars that they made on the games!
